Breast augmentation, also known as mammoplasty, has become the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. For some women, breast augmentation is a way to enhance self-confidence and self-image. For others, breast augmentation is part of the reconstruction process following breast cancer or other conditions that can affect the breast. While the reasons for choosing breast augmentation in Orange County are personal, the one thing each woman shares is the desire to feel better about her body and herself.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical enhancement procedure that involves using breast implants to accentuate the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Breast implants can help women achieve a fuller, more symmetrical bust, and a more appealing figure. This surgery can treat reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery, correct a congenital breast defect, and be used in breast reconstruction procedures to rebuild the breast after mastectomy or injury.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

The best candidates for our Ladera Ranch breast augmentation surgery are healthy women who are at a stable weight. In cases where the breast skin has lost its elasticity, breast augmentation alone will not correct the sagging. To create a healthy, youthful look, it may be advised that you combine a breast lift (mastopexy) with breast augmentation for lifted, fuller, youthful breasts.

What is the recovery like?

Following your Ladera Ranch breast augmentation surgery, you will be sent home in a soft, wire-free, front-opening bra. You will need to wear this bra continuously for the first four to six weeks to facilitate healing and minimize swelling. Post-operative discomfort is directly related to the size of the implant chosen but is readily managed with pain medication and stretching exercise that we urge our patients to begin immediately following surgery. You can expect to resume light activities within a few days and can return to work within one to two weeks. You may begin a light exercise routine in approximately three weeks after surgery, and full physical activity after six weeks.

Before & After

Meet with us

Every woman is unique, and the first step is a private consultation and evaluation of your condition. We customize each of our breast augmentation procedures to ensure the best possible outcome and the safest procedure possible. When you meet with Dr. Song or Dr. Qureshi, you will discuss several issues regarding breast implants, including the various types, shapes, size, as well as what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Our surgeon will also assess individual factors such as the size of your chest wall, the degree of skin elasticity, and any breast drooping, along with your personal preferences to determine the best steps forward to help achieve your goals.

What kind of implants do we offer?

Plastic surgeons in the U.S. have three main choices of manufacturers of silicone and saline breast implants with FDA-approval. South Coast Plastic Surgery offers these three brands – Sientra, Allergan and Mentor. Sientra silicone gel breast implants are available only to board-certified plastic surgeons and are not available to MD’s who have not gone through the rigorous training to achieve board-certification. Sientra implants are produced with the latest in silicone gel technology, creating an implant that is formable.

These implants have the advantage of retaining their shape whether you are standing up or lying down, which prevents them from rippling or folding in their shells. Sientra implants have an extremely low rupture rate, which reduces the risk of the need for a secondary surgery due to a ruptured implant. We also offer Mentor cohesive gel implants and Allergan semi-solid implants, both of which increase women’s breast augmentation options significantly.

Is saline or silicone best?

For women younger than 22 years of age, saline implants are the only commercially available option for cosmetic breast augmentation. Some women opt for saline because they are more comfortable with the idea of an implant made with a saltwater solution. Saline implants are not filled until after insertion, so the incisions can be slightly smaller than those needed when placing silicone implants.

What’s right for you?

The majority of women prefer silicone implants as they tend to produce a more natural look and feel. Today’s silicone gel is semi-firm to the touch yet is still malleable and pliant, and closely mimics the bounce and feel of natural breast tissue.

What is the difference between round and anatomically-shaped implants?

Breast augmentation can be performed using either round implants or teardrop-shaped implants, also known as anatomical implants. While either type of implant can give you beautiful results, it is important to realize that the implant shape will directly impact the appearance of your breasts after surgery.

Teardrop-shaped implants

Anatomical implants are shaped like a natural breast, with more volume concentrated at the bottom and tapering off toward the top. These teardrop-shaped implants are more popular for women with little natural breast tissue in performing breast reconstruction surgery. Anatomical implants are also the most common implant shape of choice for older women, as the graduated shape more closely resembles the natural appearance of a breast at that stage of life.

Round breast implants

Round implants provide volume throughout the breast, including the upper portion of the breast. While some women seek this aesthetic, as it gives a full, high look, others believe that this upper volume makes the implants look too unnatural.
