Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
As we age, our eyes become hidden under the heavy brow skin that weighs on the upper eyelid, and deep creases and/or bags become more prevalent below the eye. These changes are further accentuated by the descent and hollowing of cheek fat which results in a lower eyelid that appears vertically “long.” Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, enhances the overall appearance of the face by eliminating the excess skin and fat of the upper and lower eyelids and reducing the depth of the tear trough beneath the lower eyelid.
Blepharoplasty can be done under general or “twilight” anesthesia and is often done in conjunction with other facial procedures. The upper or lower eyelids alone may be treated, but best results are obtained with the “quad” blepharoplasty. Incisions are placed in natural creases and lines and very well concealed. Some patients may be candidates for a transconjunctival approach, which allows access to the fat without a skin incision. Occasionally, an eyelid tightening procedure may be necessary for a loose lower eyelid (canthopexy/canthoplasty).
Post-operative pain is usually minimal, but bruising and swelling around the eyes is expected. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days, may begin wearing makeup at one week, and resume social activities in two weeks.
