Face & Neck Lift
Although every face responds uniquely to the aging process, the stigma of facial aging commonly prompts a plastic surgery consultation. Most frequently, patients are bothered by deepening of their “smile lines” or “laugh lines,” jowls, banding in the neck, and sagging of the lower face and neck.
These changes usually become apparent in our fifties, but facelift surgery is often done in patients who demonstrate premature facial aging as early as their late 30’s. This surgery may also be done safely on healthy patients in their 70’s and 80’s.
Typical scenarios include patients who “look older than they feel”, or who are motivated to appear more youthful and energetic to remain competitive in the workplace. Dr. Song has refined the art of face lifting and recognizes that each face requires an individualized approach to restore the appearance of youth. He uses a wide variety and combination of techniques in the face and neck to achieve this goal.
Having a facelift procedure, unfortunately, does not stop the biological clock, but it does “reset” your face’s age by approximately ten to fifteen years.
WHAT IS A FACE & NECK LIFT?
A facelift and neck lift is a surgical procedure that is performed by a plastic surgeon to provide patients with a more youthful facial appearance by eliminating loose and hanging skin, resuspending the sagging tissues to a more youthful position, and volumizing the cheeks and jawline. This procedure is also called a rhytidectomy. Depending on the degree of correction needed, you may be a candidate for a mini or full face and neck lift. Through an incision concealed in the hairline and the natural valleys and folds of the ear, Dr. Song will rejuvenate and reshape the lower third of your face and neck by resuspending the sagging cheek tissue, removing the excess skin, and eliminating the bands and loose skin of the neck. In addition to reshaping the lower third of the face, a facelift can also safely incorporate additional procedures that address separate issues related to the eyes, forehead, eyebrows, and skin quality.
Facelifts are usually combined with fat transfer to the cheeks, jawline, or lips to volumize or augment these structures naturally and permanently. Facelifts may also be combined with CO2 laser or chemical peel skin resurfacing to treat the fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Facelifts are increasing in popularity among both men and women.
NEW SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
Technology is constantly changing and it impacts the medical community in a big way. As far as facelifts are concerned, technology has created several new surgical techniques that can be used as an alternative to the traditional method discussed above. Lasers, ultrasound, endoscopy, and liposuction are all utilized during facelift cosmetic surgery procedures.
- Laser techniques. Laser treatments may be used individually or in combination with a surgical procedure to reshape or resurface the neck. The CO2 laser removes problems that live in the superficial layer of our skin which includes: pigment irregularities (dark spots), textural problems (fine lines/wrinkles and skin bumps), and pore-size irregularities.
- High-frequency Ultrasound. Ultherapy utilizes high-frequency ultrasound to target the structural layer of the face to tighten and firm in a non-surgical, non-invasive fashion.
- Brow lifts are now performed with specialized endoscopy equipment which allows smaller incisions and decreased recovery time.
- The jawline, chin and neck areas are readily targeted by liposuction to remove fatty deposits and create a more contoured and attractive appearance. It can be done in conjunction with laser or traditional facelift procedures.
Surprisingly, pain is minimal and well controlled with pain medications after facelift surgery. Most patients have moderate to significant bruising and swelling, which begins to resolve around post-operative days five to ten. A drainage tube is commonly placed behind the ear and is removed the morning after surgery. Typically, at two weeks, patients may return to work; and at three weeks, most return to normal social activities.
FACELIFTS FOR MEN
Facial aging in men has important nuances from a woman’s face. Respecting these differences, and understanding a man’s bony and soft tissue facial structure, allows Dr. Song to create a lasting, refreshed appearance while maintaining masculinity. Most frequently, men complain of deep nasolabial folds (“smile lines”), heavy jowls, and banding in the neck.
DR. SONG’S APPROACH TO A FACELIFT
It’s likely that you know, or have at least seen someone, who has had plastic or cosmetic surgery done. If it’s noticeable and the procedure left the person with an unnatural look, it’s not generally a good result. Dr. Kyle Song goes to great lengths to ensure his patients look and feel like their procedures produce natural-looking results. It’s especially important to make sure that results are fresh and natural when procedures are done on the face because they are the easiest to identify, and they are also the most difficult to camouflage.
