Excessively large breasts can cause a variety of physical and psychological challenges for women. The added weight can lead to chronic neck and back pain, shoulder aches, headaches, infections under the breast fold, and a feeling of embarrassment or dissatisfaction with your appearance. Whether you wish to alleviate those symptoms or to reshape your breasts to make them more aesthetically pleasing, a breast reduction in Orange County can help.

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that creates a more proportional upper body through the reduction of excess breast tissue and lifting and reshaping of the reduced breast. This procedure helps women reduce the weight and size of overly-large breasts and achieve a more beautiful, balanced breast shape.

Who is the right candidate for breast reduction?

The best candidates for a breast reduction in Irvine will possess good overall physical and emotional health. You may be a candidate for this procedure if:

  • You are self-conscious about the size of your breasts
  • Your breasts cause chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Your breasts limit your physical activity
  • You have significant sagging or drooping
  • Your breasts cause irritation or rashes

Why undergo breast reduction surgery?

Overly large, heavy breasts can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms. You may have lived with these symptoms for years. Many women with this condition dream of being able to wear standard bra and clothing sizes and confidently participate in physical activities such as exercise and sports. Imagine your breasts looking round, balanced with your frame, and having all aesthetic issues resolved. That’s the beauty of breast reduction surgery at South Coast Plastic Surgery, the premier center for breast reduction in Ladera Ranch.

What is the procedure?

Breast reduction surgery is typically done under general anesthesia and performed as an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art, accredited surgery center, where privacy, discretion, and personal care matter to us.

The surgery involves making an incision, then removing excess fat and tissue using liposuction or surgical excision from the breast. The remaining underlying tissue will then be lifted and reshaped, and excess skin will be trimmed away. If necessary, the nipple and areola will be reshaped and repositioned so they are facing front and center on your newly-shaped breast mound.

You will notice almost instantly that the uncomfortable symptoms associated with overly-large breasts are improved or gone entirely, and you will experience a happier and more confident body image.

What should I expect in the recovery?

Following your breast reduction surgery, you can expect to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising for several days. With this surgery, drains are not used.  You will have prescription pain medication to keep you comfortable through the early stages of your recovery. Most women will be able to resume daily activities within a couple of days, and light exercise at the gym in as little as two weeks after the procedure. Physically strenuous activities may be restricted for several weeks. Complete recovery and healing take approximately two months.

Are There Risks or Complications With Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery has some risks, such as bleeding, infection, and reactions to anesthesia, as any surgery does. However, the procedure is generally considered relatively safe and effective. Although uncommon, possible complications can include scarring, breast asymmetry, excess fluid in the breast tissue, and temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts.

Having your surgery performed by an experienced, board-certified surgeon such as Dr. Song or Dr. Qureshi dramatically reduces the chance of complications or risks in your breast reduction surgery.

Is Scarring a Concern?

The incisions are carefully and precisely made to result in the most minimal scarring possible. The incisions are most commonly made around the areola, but in some cases, incisions may need to include a vertical line down to the breast crease or a further incision across the fold hidden in the breast crease.

After your procedure, your scars will fade and flatten out after about six months. They will continue to lighten and fade in the next couple of years.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

Pricing for breast reduction takes into account the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, postoperative garment fees, and others. Patients undergoing additional procedures at the time of their breast reduction, such as a mommy makeover, liposuction, or mastopexy, will see a higher fee bracket. In cases where a patient is pursuing breast reduction for medical reasons, insurance carriers may cover all or a portion of the costs. During your private consultation, we will provide a detailed quote based on your personalized treatment plan.
