Liposuction

Do you have irksome areas of fatty tissue despite years of consistent exercise and healthy eating?  Are you happy with your body except for a particular target area?  Sometimes our DNA prevents us from achieving our ideal body shape.  For patients with good skin quality and elasticity, liposuction is a highly effective technique to sculpt the face, neck, arms, chest, abdomen, back, hips and legs.  It is important to understand that this is not a weight reduction surgery, but a body contouring procedure designed to improve your figure.

There are many liposuction devices that are heavily marketed as superior instruments for cosmetic improvement.  The truth is that the vast majority of board-certified plastic surgeons choose traditional liposuction, whereby fatty tissue is removed by applying suction through specialized cannulas.  In Dr. Song’s experience, a variation of traditional liposuction called SAFE liposuction achieves the same body enhancement as ultrasound and laser-assisted liposuction, but is considerably safer for the patient in that it does not produce burns, and is significantly less likely to result in lumpy contour irregularities. More important than the artfully marketed device, is the surgeon’s artistic ability to sculpt the body to match the patient’s vision.

AREAS LIPOSUCTION CAN TREAT

Liposuction can remove the fatty tissue from problem areas and render them lean and sculpted. This cosmetic surgery procedure is ideal for patients who have good skin elasticity and skin quality and can be used safely in the following areas:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Axilla
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Legs
THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

Single site liposuction may be performed under “twilight” anesthesia, but most often liposuction is done under general anesthesia.  Most procedures are outpatient, but large volume cases (greater than five liters) necessitate hospital admission for overnight observation.  Access to the fatty tissue beneath the skin is through multiple, small, four-millimeter incisions hidden in creases, tattoos or under clothing lines.  A tumescent solution is injected prior to liposuction to minimize discomfort, bleeding and bruising.

RECOVERY

Because no skin is excised during liposuction, the best results are dependent on the skin contracting and re-draping over the reduced volume of underlying fatty tissue.  For this reason, you will be asked to wear a compression garment around the surgical site continuously for three weeks after surgery (it may be removed for bathing).  You may resume normal activities immediately, and can return to the gym or exercise as soon as tolerated.

Your final results will be apparent in approximately three to four months after all the swelling has subsided.  Results are permanent as long as you maintain your weight, but even with weight gain, you should see an equal distribution, and not disproportionate growth back in your problem areas.

LIPOSUCTION FOR MEN

Love handles: two words that are the bane of so many men’s existence.  Male DNA often programs the body to store extra fatty tissue in the flanks and hips, and very reluctantly allows improvement with diet and exercise.  For these non-obese gentleman plagued by bulky love handles, liposuction is the answer for a slimmer, more attractive body.
