The Benefits of Meeting With a Plastic Surgeon

Although plastic surgeons provide both plastic and cosmetic surgery there is a significant distinction between the career of a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. Reality TV has made it difficult for the general public to notice or even care that there is a difference, but it’s true nonetheless. It’s legal for any board certified physician to practice the art of cosmetic surgery. The downside to this legality is that there are a number of physicians who claim to be cosmetic surgeons even when their background could possibly be in the field of emergency room medicine or podiatry.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that is unique and requires dedicated training. It is not to be confused with other specialties or subspecialties that are confined to a particular region of the body or organ system. Plastic and cosmetic surgery requires physicians to be trained rigorously, starting in general surgery where they remain for 3 to 5 years until they advance to plastic surgical training. The kinds of surgical procedures that are performed during training include but are not limited to the following:

  • Reconstructive surgery following cancer ablation or traumatic injury
  • Pediatric surgery for a wide range of birth defects
  • Surgery of the hands and upper extremities
  • Microsurgery
  • Burn surgery
  • Cosmetic surgery
